Singapore - A final year student of Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU) stabbed a lecturer Monday morning and then jumped off a building to his death, NTU said in a statement.

The professor is in stable condition. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he received medical treatment for cuts sustained in the attack.

The student of NTU's electrical and electronic engineering school was pronounced dead after his body had been found at the foot of the seven-storey university building.

NTU didn't give any details about the background of the stabbing.

"The university is deeply shocked and saddened by what has happened," NTU president Su Guaning said.

"The university community will rally together at this difficult time and do our utmost to help the student's family, the professor and his family, and those traumatized by the incident," he added.

Local media identified the lecturer as Chan Kap Luk, an information engineering professor at NTU. He is said to have been the supervisor of the student in a project. (dpa)
