Toxic godowns to be probed by crime branch

20 tonnes of medical waste found in Vatva godown

The authorities of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) have decided to hand over to the crime branch for further investigation all the cases involving the godowns from where biomedical waste had been recovered recently.

AMC’s medical officer, Dr SP Kulkarni, told DNA that the AMC would continue its search and raids on godowns which were suspected of storing biomedical waste. “Besides the godowns where biomedical waste has already been found, the AMC would also hand over to the crime branch for further investigation all the godowns that it finds storing biomedical waste in the future,” Kulkarni said.

During raids on Sunday, the AMC authorities found around 20 tonnes of biomedical waste stored in a godown in the Vatva area of the city. Sources said the authorities had recovered more than 60 tonnes of waste, of which around 20 tonnes was biomedical waste. “The godown has been sealed,” Kulkarni said. The waste was found in a warehouse opposite Rajdeep Estate at Bibi Talav in Vatva. The warehouse belongs to Kagajwala and Company which is owned by Firij Umar Kagajwala.

Sources further said that an incinerator in the south zone had also been raided.
