Open won't be budging from January date

Open won't be budging from January dateMelbourne  - The Australian Open won't be going anywhere, with it's traditional January date set in stone by tournament boss Craig Tiley.

"It works best for us, for Australia in January. It's over school holidays, kids and families can come. It's the only time where there's no major global event that's being broadcast," he told local media on the eve of the classic final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

This year's edition had the usual complement of issues including record-breaking heat, late matches which ended in the small hours and player calls for a date change to give them more preparation time of more of an off-season.

Women's star Ana Ivanovic's advice to keep things as they are counterbalanced come opinions from the men's side that February should be considered.

But Tiley points out: "The last time I looked at average temperatures in January and February, February was hotter in Australia so I wouldn't support that move.

"Tennis gets a really significant free kick and jump up because it is scheduled for this particular time of the year."

The South African administrator said instead that the ATP season should end earlier to give players the longer time off many have called for.

"I've always said that the season should finish sooner. It finishes in November and it should be October, and then they could take a month off and start training." (dpa)
