Bhubaneshwar, Dec 31 (ANI): In spite of government claims of total normalcy prevailing in Orissa, some parts of the state are still under curfew.

In addition to thirty platoons of Orissa Police force, two companies of para-military forces have also been deployed to the district.

"The situation is under control. There was tension over the last couple of days because of various agitations. We have deployed force from all the police stations in the district. Senior officers and magistrates are also campaigning at various places and police patrolling is in progress. Anything, which is being reported, is being promptly attended to. At the same time we are also taking preventive actions." said State’s Inspector General of Police, Pradeep Kapoor.

But according to some victims of the violence neither the state authorities nor the government officials have visited them or have provided relief.

"I lost my house. I lost everything. I am like this since the day the violence started. I'm begging for food here and there," Sanjhu Nayal, a victim.

Earlier, on Sunday a delegation led by Delhi’s Archbishop Reverend Vincent M. Conscessao met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to the seek Centre’s help to curtail religious violence in Orissa.

Dr. Singh assured the Christian delegation that attempts to disturb communal peace would be austerely dealt with. He also assured the delegation that steps would be taken to offer appropriate compensation for damage to property.

At least three people were killed in the violence that was sparked off on December 24 when Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists led mobs burnt down churches.

Over a dozen churches and prayer houses in Khandamal District were torched by the suspected saffron activists over Christmas celebrations.

The saffron activists were reportedly agitated following an attack on VHP leader Laxamanananda Saraswati, who led an anti-conversion movement. (ANI)
