PC shipments rose marginally at 1.7% in Q3

PC shipments rose marginally at 1.7% in Q3Personal computer (PC) shipments showed a marginal increase of 1.7% for the period ended September 2008. It indicates about 9 per cent drop in the PC shipments as compared to the previous data. Meanwhile, note book shipment has shown 38% increase in the third quarter according to the recently compiled data of research firm, IDC.

The global slowdown impacted the PC shipment from all leading computer manufactures. Large companies noted 13 per cent decline in the PC shipment while home segment and small and medium businesses (SMB) segment reported 3 per cent and 16 per cent increase in the PC shipment for Q3.

An analyst with IDC India, Sumanta Mukherjee said, "The current subdued buying sentiment has led to inventory pile-up with channel partners, adversely impacting the finances. Vendors must re-discover niche segments with buying potential and implement innovative marketing programs to overcome this situation."

Hewlett-Packard (HP), HCL Infosystems and Dell recorded significant market shares of 19.7%, 9.8% and 9.6 per cent respectively. Thus, Hewlett-Packard emerged as a top company on the basis of market share followed by HCL and Dell. HP, Dell and Acer performed well in notebook sector as per nine months data compiled by IDC.
