Nepal Constituent Assembly puts final stamp on statute calendarKathmandu, Nov 17 : Nepal Constituent Assembly (CA) has unanimously endorsed the proposed calendar of events, according to which the new constitution will be endorsed by April 2010.

According to Kantipur, the calendar plans to promulgate the new Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal by May 28, 2010, immediately after all Constituent Assembly members sign the final draft and the chairman authenticates it.

Prior to endorsing the draft schedule prepared by the Constituent Assembly Secretariat, the Business Advisory Committee on Sunday amended the draft, making minor changes to the schedule.

According to the final calendar, 14 different committees including the Constitutional Committee (CC), 10 thematic committees and three procedures committees will elect their Chairpersons by December 30.

The calendar gives 12 weeks, instead of 11 weeks to the Public Opinion Collection and Coordination Committee (POCCC) to carry out public hearings, seminars and interaction programmes across the country.

It has given two weeks more extending it from seven to nine weeks (January or February 2009) for all 10 thematic committees to expedite interaction programmes with civil society, concerned experts and common people and collect opinions before drafting the concept papers to be incorporated in the new constitution within their specified jurisdiction.
