Nature’s Variety Announces Voluntary Recall of its Instinct Raw Chicken Formula for Dogs

Nature's Variety, a pet food company that distributes products in Southern California, has issued a recall of dog food produced by it due to salmonella risk. The manufacturer has announced a voluntary recall of their Instinct Raw Chicken Formula for dogs.

The products that company has recalled presently are marked with 'Best By' date of 04/27/16. These products are recalled specifically because as per company these products may be contaminated with salmonella and present a risk to pets and humans.

The company said, "Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products".

As per experts, pets who consume food with salmonella get infected and may become lethargic. Some pets can even have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. They can also have loss of appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

The company stated that dogs that have consumed salmonella infected foods and still are healthy can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has the symptoms, the company recommends that the owner must contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Company affirmed that so far no case of salmonella infection in pets has come across. But they have suggested consumers should follow the 'Simple Handling Tips' published on the Nature's Variety package when disposing of the affected product.

The affected product was distributed through retail stores in the United States and limited distribution in Canada, the company said.
