Mufti wants special forces Act revoked

Even as the anger over Sopore killings continues to simmer, the main opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) is all set to embarrass the Omar Abdullah-led government by bringing in a resolution in the assembly for the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and reduction of troops.

"As long as the army stays in civilian areas, the lives of innocents will be at risk. The PDP will bring a resolution in the coming assembly session to press for revocation of AFSPA and reduction of troops," PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said. The Bomai-Sopore incidents showed the impunity security forces enjoyed under AFSPA, he said. "The army needs to concentrate on borders now as violence in the state has come down," the former chief minister said.
