Monica Pleads Innocence
Monika Devi, India's lone woman representative for weightlifting claims that she has been victim of the foul play. She was stopped at airport just before her departure for Beijing to participate in Olympic Games. Monika Devi is from Potsangbam Nachou village in Manipur's Bishnupur district. She was going to represent India in the 69 kg category at the Beijing Olympics. She had won a silver medal at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006.
The Indian Weightlifting Federation has demanded for fresh dope test. Family members of Monika claim that conspiracy has been hatched against her to defame the players of the north-east. Monika has accused people associated with another lifter, Shailaja Pujari for the foul play in doping episode.
Monika's father L. Nabachandra Singh said, "This entire episode is nothing but a conspiracy against my daughter to promote someone else. We want the test to be confirmed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and request the authorities to repeat the test at the doping test facility in Beijing."
The Indian federation Secretary, Sq. Ldr. B.R. Gulati (retd) questioned the authenticity of test forwarded by SAI. He claims that these tests were against the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) rules. He said that unfair means has been used against Monika. She was not even allowed to seal the bottle containing her urine sample.
Monika said, “Send me to Beijing; test me, if I come positive not just life ban me, shoot me.” She added that she has under gone 30 doping test till now. She was never tested positive in any of the test.
Monika had to report on the morning of August 7 to be tested by WADA/IWF. The 69-kg competition is on August 13.
