Mine worker killed in Canadian mine collapse
According to the official reports, a shaft in a zinc mine in central Yukon collapsed, killing an Ontario man and temporarily trapping two other workers.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported on Monday that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police say the incident occurred Sunday around 3:30 a. m. local time in an underground area of Yukon Zinc Corp.'s Wolverine mine where two mechanics and a machine operator were working.
RCMP Sgt. Don Rogers said, "Two of the persons were able to be extricated from the mine but the third person, unfortunately, was trapped by debris."
He further said, "At approximately 3 p. m. ... workers at the mine were able to get to the trapped worker who, unfortunately, was located deceased."
The RCMP declined to release his name but the man's family has been notified.
CBC further noted that this is the Wolverine mine's second death in a year.
It was reported that last October, Paul Wentzell, 20, a contract employee from Newfoundland and Labrador, was killed after being hit by a truck while working on a tunnel. (With Inputs from Agencies)
