Mattel with huge jump as women get one training round in at last
Czech Republic - Coline Mattel soared 99 metres on Wednesday as the first training jump for the inaugural women's ski jumping world championship competition was held on Wednesday.
The 37 women faced difficult conditions in the form of heavy snowfall and only one instead of three planned rounds was held.
Mattel soared the huge jump from a high gate, while the top favourites started from lower gates.
German Anna Haefele had 97 metres, compatriot Ulrike Graessler 94.5m, Norwegian star Anette Sagen 93.5m while American ace Lindsey Van had to be content with 83m.
More training jumps are set for Thursday, weather permitting. The competition for the first gold in the event is on Friday.
Meanwhile, 12-year-old Czech Natalie Dejmkova has withdrawn from the competition after crashing as the first jumper on Tuesday before that session was scrapped due to adverse weather.
Dejmkova said "it did not really hurt." Her coach Jaroslav Sakala agreed that it was "nothing really dramatic" but at the same time announced that "I will not allow Natalie to jump on Friday." (dpa)
