Mathematics Lovers celebrating Pi Day
Pi Day is an annual celebration commemorating the mathematical constant pi. On Saturday, at about 9:27 am, scientists and mathematicians around the world celebrated the one-in-100-year event in a bizarre manner.
Usually, the International Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 at 1:59 am. The first six digits of the date and time denote the number pi, which is 3.14159, in the United States date format. The event occurs once in a century. This year, the event falls on 14 March. While several pi enthusiasts have decided to celebrate the event at the traditional time, many have already celebrated it at 9:27 am. According to them, the time denotes eight digits of the world's most recognizable mathematical symbols (3.1415927).
According to mathematicians, the number is a mathematical constant. It is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. As it is an irrational number, so its digits never repeat or end. The symbol is represented by the Greek letter p. The number has been represented by the Greek letter since the mid of 18th century. The symbol has helped in the discovery of the ‘God Particle’.
The annual celebration includes several types of activities like parading in a circle, eating pie and creating pi puns. The symbol was founded by a physicist at San Francisco Exploratorium, Larry Shaw, in 1988. About six years ago, the United States Congress had passed a resolution recognizing March 14 as National Pi Day.
According to graduate students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, they have decided to celebrate the very special event with pie. As per reports, the student and faculty of the center have baked pies and for about two dollars, any person passing the Durham Research Center could vote on the best.
