Man, who was used to drink more than four liters of iced tea a day, goes into kidney failure
Doctors trying to solve the mystery behind a man's kidney failure found that the man was used to drink more than four liters of iced tea every day. According to reports, in May, a man from Arkansas came to hospital and said that he was experiencing nausea, weakness, fatigue and body aches.
After some tests, doctors found that urine of the 56-year-old man had high levels of calcium oxalate crystals, which form into kidney stones. When the man was asked about family history, he stated that he had no family history of kidney stones. He also admitted that he used to drink about 16 glasses of 250ml of iced tea a day.
Doctors at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences examined the man. They ruled out many causes for the man’s kidney problems. At the end, they found that excessive ice tea that he drank everyday was the only cause of his kidney problems.
As per some reports, black tea contains high levels of oxalate, which produce kidney stones and lead to kidney failure if consumed in excessive amount. Dr. Umbar Ghaffar from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences wrote an article for the New England Journal of Medicine, where Ghaffar explained about the patient. The doctor said that drinking too much iced tea was the only reasonable explanation for his kidney failure.
The chemical oxalate was found to have blocked the man's kidneys to the point that they had become inflamed. As per the reports, the man needed dialysis and remained on it because his kidneys were extensively damaged. According to doctors, the man is likely to spend the rest of his life in dialysis.
The man has not been identified yet, but according to doctors, the man was consuming about 3 to 10 times the amount of ice tea an average person drinks.
