Malaysian student dies after being caned by teacher

Malaysian student dies after being caned by teacher Kuala Lumpur  - A 9-year-old boy said to be suffering from a central nervous system disorder died after he was caned by his teacher at school, official news reports said Wednesday.

The boy complained of dizziness after he was disciplined and caned by the female teacher at a school in the southern state of Negeri Sembilan, said state police chief Osman Salleh.

His parents were alerted, and they immediately sent the boy to a hospital for treatment, Osman was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.

However, he died early Wednesday at home after being released by the hospital.

Osman said no police reports have been lodged against the teacher, adding that parents were advised to inform schools if their children suffered from any diseases.

"This way the schools will have proper records on the health condition of their charges (and) teachers will be extra cautious when taking any disciplinary action against them," he said.

Malaysian school teachers are barred from publicly whipping students for disciplinary offenses, but many still discipline errant pupils with the cane inside a classroom or teacher's room. (dpa)
