Majority of South Africans optimistic about hosting World Cup

Football World Cup 2010Johannesburg- The number of South Africans who are confident about the country's ability to host the 2010 World Cup appears to be on the increase.

However, concerns on security and the class of the home team remained.

According to an opinion poll carried out by the African Response institute and released Tuesday, 69 per cent of 1,200 people questioned said they were confident that infrastructure for the football tournament would be finished on time.

But only 49 per cent felt that South Africa's police force were up to the job of providing security at the World Cup while only a third had confidence in the country's ability to provide a secure energy supply.

South Africa is one of the world's most violent societies. Around 50 people are murdered each day and another 50 the object of a murder attempt.

In addition, only 39 per cent felt the national team was of a high enough standard to be a force in tournament.

The poll was carried out in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town. African Response has been commissioning polls since March 2006 with this one taking place between April and June of this year. (dpa)
