Majority of Britons unable to Recognize Signs of Skin Cancer

The British Association of Dermatologists conducted a survey from which it was found that more than 75% of Britons are not able to recognize signs of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is responsible for around 2,100 deaths yearly in the UK. The British Association of Dermatologists shared that 95% of those who took part in the survey were aware of the fact that the disease was becoming more common. But they were not aware of the link with sunburn.

Last summer, the poll was carried out in which 1,018 people took part and has been published in Sun Awareness Week. As per the survey, around 40% stated that they have never checked signs of the disease and 77% do not have enough confidence to recognize signs of a melanoma. Also, 81% do not feel they are able to recognize signs of a non-melanoma skin cancer.

Those who have a history of sunburn have more than double the risk of developing melanoma and 72% of the people who took part in the survey stated that they have faced sunburns in the past year.

“This is a reflection of poor sun protection habits. People underestimate the damage that sunburn can do to their skin, and many think that skin reddening is just a harmless part of the tanning process, rather than a sure sign that you have damaged your skin irreparably”, stated Johnathon Major from the association.

Sunshine provides health benefits and aids the body’s production of vitamin D for strong and healthy bones. But then also, dermatologists affirmed that it is important to use a sunscreen and to spend time in shade. They also suggest to cover body when stepping out in the sun.
