Lebanese prime minister denies chances of civil war

Lebanese prime minister denies chances of civil warAccording to the prime minister of Lebanon, the findings of a tribunal probing the 2005 slaying of a former Lebanese prime minister will not push the country toward civil war.

It has been reported that Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah announced last week that he expected members of the Shiite resistance in Lebanon to be indicted by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon for the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

It obtained evidence from the STL that indicated cellphone records linked Hezbollah operatives to the planning of the operation, said German news magazine Der Spiegel in 2009.

The STL probe wouldn't push his country into civil war, said Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, the late prime minister's son.

Lebanon's Daily Star newspaper quoted him as saying that his father inspired him to "conduct a re-evaluation" of Lebanese history and more "forward in the right direction."

The report further noted that Damascus and members of Hezbollah were widely believed to have played a role in the plot. Beirut and Damascus have restored diplomatic ties recently and Hezbollah lawmakers hold Cabinet positions in the unity government led by Hariri. (With Inputs from Agencies)
