Lebanese president likely to visit Damascus next week, report says

Michel SuleimanDamascus - Newly elected Lebanese President Michel Suleiman is expected to visit Syria next week as part of an Arab tour, Syria's semi-official daily al-Watan said Wednesday.

The newspaper cited Lebanese sources as saying General Suleiman was expected to hold talks in Damascus.

The unnamed sources said the visit would be delayed to the end of June if Lebanon's powers now trying to form a cabinet fail to reach an agreement by next week.

The visit could not be held earlier due to the busy schedule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

An agreement signed in the Qatari capital Doha in May led to the election of Suleiman and ended an 18-month political stand-off between Lebanon's Western-backed ruling coalition and Syria and Iran- backed opposition. (dpa)
