JNU revokes rustication order

Jawaharlal Nehru University In a major move, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Saturday revoked rustication of nine students who were found culpable of ragging last month.

According to the authorities working at the JNU, the punished students had pleaded to the JNU chancellor, professor Yash Pal, who then asked for a review of the matter.

Confirming the development, professor H B Bohidar, Chief proctor, JNU, said: "These students had personally met the chancellor about 10 days ago. As he is the appellate authority, he had all the right to ask for a review. Keeping in mind the career prospect of these students, we have withdrawn the rustication.''

The official said that the students have submitted a letter of apology.

Bohidar, however, added that the university will be keeping a strict watch on these students. Their day-to-day activities will also be monitored everyday by the university. Moreover, the hostel facility of these students has also been withdrawn.

It may be recalled that these students ragged a first-semester MCA student named Balbir Chand in the campus on Aug 12 last month.

Notably, this was the first ever ragging case reported from this prestigious university ever since its establishment 4 decades ago.
