Jayawardene smashes century on first day
Former Sri Lankan skipper M Jayawardene smashed an unbeaten century as Sri Lankan team scored 293 runs for loss of 3 wickets on the first day of the first test match against New Zealand at Galle on Tuesday.
New Zealand won the toss and decided to bowl first. New Zealand got to a perfect start as C Martin took the wicket of Sri Lankan opener N Paranavitana (0) on third ball of the match.
Martin stroked back again, and he showed the way to pavilion to Sri Lankan skipper K Sangakkara (8). Sri Lankan team was struggling at 16 runs for two wickets when T Dilshan and Jayawardene put together 118 runs for third wicket.
Dilshan played blistering inning of 92 runs in just 72 balls, while Jayawardene was unbeaten at the individual score of 118 runs. T Samaraweera scored unbeaten 82 runs to put Sri Lanka on the top at the close of play on the first day.
