Japanese government hopeful about new tuition plans though critics call it imperfect
The newly enacted law providing aid for high school tuition still has problems, including limited benefits for low-income households, Japanese officials have informed.
The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on Friday that the law, which does not include an income cap for recipients, requires cutbacks on tax deductions for dependents ages 16 to 18, amounting to an increased financial burden on parents with children in the age group who do not attend high school.
The aid will also not cover the entire tuition costs for most public schools, leaving parents to pay the remainder.
It hopes private schools will decrease their tuition costs to reflect the amount of aid being distributed, the Ministry of Education said but The Yomiuri Shimbun said the possibility is seen as unlikely. (With Inputs from Agencies)
