Israel and Syria resume indirect peace negotiations in Turkey

Jerusalem - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud OlmertTwo of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's top aides were Tuesday en route to Turkey for a fourth round of indirect peace negotiations with Syria, Israel radio
reported.

Yoram Turbovich and Shalom Turgeman wanted to proceed with the talks on arrival, the report said.

The latest round is to cover how the two former enemies can move on from the phase of indirect talks to direct talks, Syrian government officials have said.

The negotiations began in May after a seven-year freeze in the Israeli-Syrian peace process. Syria is demanding a complete withdrawal from the Golan Heights, captured by Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Israel wants Syria to end its support of the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah and radical Palestinian groups.

Turkish diplomats have been carrying messages back and forth between Israel and Syria. (dpa)
