International Banana Industry Faces Threat from Panama Tropical Race 4
Experts have warned that the international banana industry is under threat from the disease called Panama Tropical Race 4 (TR4). The disease has largely affected banana plantation in several parts of the world.
It has been found that a work to cope with this issue has been undergoing at a large scale in the Central American country of Costa Rica. The banana crop, which has been affected the most, is the popular Cavendish variety.
Some experts have also warned that if the disease is not controlled in time then it might lead in annihilation of the global banana industry.
As per reports so far, the fungus has been reported in banana plantation in several regions of Asia, particularly in China, the Philippines, Malaysia and Taiwan. The most recent report of the fungus in bananas has come from Africa.
The disease was first detected in north Queensland earlier this year, where Biosecurity Queensland took every possible step to limit its spread.
Experts said as of now their main focus is on Central and Latin America because these areas supply about 82% of the world's bananas.
Reports have revealed that in Costa Rica almost every farm of banana plantation has been declared at the risk of TR4. Banana production in Coast Rica alone provides around 8% of employment.
Posters and flyers have been spread all over to banana producers, plantation owners, workers and farm managers to inform them about the risks associated with TR4.
