Intel to close down desktop motherboard businessGlobal chipmaker, Intel Corp has said that it is planning to shut down its desktop motherboard business during the coming three years.

Inter has decided to scrap its desktop motherboard manufacturing business after being in the segment for about two decades. The company said that it not manufacture motherboards after it launched fourth-generation Core processor 'Haswell' in 2013.

Intel said in an emailed statement that, "As Intel gradually ramps down its motherboard business we are ramping up critical areas of the desktop space including integration of innovative solutions for the PC ecosystem such as reference design development, NUC and other areas to be discussed later."

Intel affirmed that the company will continue to provide support for all the products sold in the warranty period that are sold with specific products. The company has seen increasing demand for PC tower type designs.

Intel also said that the employees who were engaged in motherboard manufacturing business will be redistributed in other areas including both desktop and mobile computers. Engineers from the motherboard manufacturing division will now focus on expanding Intel's form factor reference design work and also develop new computing solutions for the company's partners.
