Infants can also suffer from Stroke

Chances of having a stroke get doubled with every decade of life after 55 years of age. But it might be surprising for many to know that infants can also suffer a stroke.

The National Stroke Association shared that 6 in every 100,000 children in the US gets affected by stroke. Stroke is one of the 10 leading causes of death among children in the country. Though the risk of stroke is much higher in adults than children, challenges posed by the stroke are more for children than adults.

It has been found that the early symptoms of stroke in children are much more subtle in adults, which means that they generally get unrecognized. The International Alliance for Pediatric Stroke (IAPS) stated that newborns who suffer from strokes do not even show symptoms until the age of 4 to 8 months. Because parents do not think that their children can suffer from a stroke, therefore, many children are not able to receive the required treatment.

Researchers said that early treatment for stroke is the key. Around 20 to 40% children die after a stroke. Those who are able to survive, around 50 to 80% of them will have a lifelong neurological problems like partial paralysis or total paralysis.

There are two types of pediatric strokes- perinatal stroke and childhood stroke. The first one is also called as fetal stroke that takes place between last 18 weeks of pregnancy and the first 30 days of birth. Childhood stroke takes place between the ages of 1 month and 18 years. It is also said that children could also suffer from ischemic stroke.
