Indian guilty of hacking extradited to United States

Guilty of hacking into online brokerage accounts for manipulating stock prices, 34-year-old Jaisankar Marimuthu of Chennai was extradited from Hong Kong to the United States, on June 20.

Jaisankar Marimuthu, along with Thirugnanam Ramanathan and Chockalingam Ramanathan, is accused of operating an international "hack, pump and dump" scheme, in which they hacked into online brokerages, and used stolen identities to create new accounts for buying and selling stocks in order to manipulate prices to their benefit.

The spokesperson of the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) told that Marimuthu had already been arrested by Hong Kong police on similar charges. The DoJ spokesperson also told that Thirugnanam Ramanathan pleaded guilty to fraud charges stemming from the scheme.

According to the DoJ spokesperson, Ramanathan was sentenced to two years in prison in September. He was deported on Jan. 29.
