India refutes US ‘Foreign Trade Barriers’ report
India on Friday refuted the US report that alleged US exporters continue to face undue tariff and non-tariff trade barriers due to inconsistency in Indian trade policy.
In its report titled `2013 National Trade Estimate: Foreign Trade Barriers,' the US Trade Representative listed a number of problems that US exporters face in India, and alleged that the problems were not allowing US exporters to realize the full potential of economic ties between the two companies.
But, the Indian Commerce Ministry claimed that Indian trade policy is transparent as well as consistent with rules & regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
An official from the Ministry said, "India's policies relating to tariffs, import policies, government procurement, export subsidies, intellectual property protection are consistent with its international and bilateral obligations."
The official claimed that India had been implementing its tariff policy as per multilateral agreement and assured that the country was committed to further liberalize the policy based on the global negotiations.
Referring to the allegations with regard to issues concerning banking, insurance and other services sectors, the official declared that India's regulatory regime is based on national interest and that it was in conformity with its obligations under GATS.
With regard to allegations about intellectual property rights, India claimed that its IPR regime is accordance with its commitments under the TRIPS agreement.
