India to face Russia in World Group
The draw for the Davis Cup World Group has been announced in Geneva on Wednesday and India will meet Russia in the first round of the 2010 World Group. The matches of India and Russia tie will be played from March 5-7.
India had defeated South Africa 4-1 in World Group playoff to advance in to the World Group after a long period of 11 years. But, India will certainly face tough challenge from Russian team and playing conditions. Indian players will have to cope up with cold and playing on indoor clay courts.
Russian team is very strong on the cards as compared to their opponents. Their squad includes world number 8 Nikolay Davydenko while Somdev Devarman, world no.
131, is highest ranked player in the Indian team.
Russian team, two times Davis Cup champion, has not lost any match on their home soil since 1996. They have won 16 straight matches while playing at their home.
India's non-playing captain, S. P. admitted that they are not thinking of playing against a better team but they are worried about cold and playing on slow court.
