India To Achieve 500 Mln Mobile Phone User Base By 2010 - Nokia
Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has stated that the India’s mobile phone user base is expected to reach 500 million mobile phone users by the next two years (2010).
Nokia, which holds a big market share in India, added that out of the above figure, about 60 million users would have mobile video capability, while 100 million users will prefer mobile music services.
While lecturing at the Goafest Conclave, D Shivakumar, vice president and managing director of Nokia India, said that approximately half the subscribers will be accessing the Internet through their cell phones.
He anticipates, “Mobile phones are not just about voice anymore. Services delivered through mobiles would open up a big opportunity for the advertisers in India with a huge untapped potential.”
Nokia also said that the mobile phone market would be divided into three different sections; the top end market section would include 50 million subscribers, the mid-range would have about 150 million customers whereas the third tier, which is claimed to be unique to India, is likely to be ruled by low cost basic handsets with least functionality.
The huge growth will be lucrative to advertisers, considering cellular phone as a new advertising medium.
