Independent report criticizes Winterbourne View care home
An independent report has criticized Winterbourne View care home, which provides care to severely disabled people and also trashed authorities for failing to identify the lack in adequate service at the care home.
The report said that the care home management put profit before the care of its patients. It also had harsh words for Health regulators, police, social services and the NHS for failing to spot signs of inadequate service at the home.
The review comes after the final member pleaded guilty to allegations of abusing patients in the home that is located in Hambrook, South Gloucestershire. About 11 former staff members have agreed to a total of 38 charges of either neglect or ill treatment of people, who have severe learning disabilities.
The serious abuse of patients was abused after Terry Bryan, a senior nurse at the home approached the BBC1's Panorama programme and explained the situation. The police investigations were initiated after a BBC Panorama programme exposed patients being held down, slapped, mocked and doused in water at the Winterbourne View home.
The BBC report resulted in a British Department of Health investigation as well as another investigation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The Nursing and Midwifery Council had suspended two nurses until further investigations.
The CQC said the scandal was a "watershed" while the Government said its own review would be published in the autumn.
