Idaho Legislator believes Rape Cannot Cause Pregnancy
Rep. Pete Nielsen, an Idaho legislator, has got himself into trouble after making odd comments about the non-possibility of getting pregnant due to rape. The comments were made during a discussion being undertaken by the House State Affairs committee on making it mandatory for the abortion providers to inform women about the clinics where they can get ultrasound conducted free of cost.
Nielsen commented that women who are the victims of rape are most likely not prone to get pregnant due to the heinous crime because consent is a very important biological factor when it comes to pregnancy.
Basically, according to Pete Nielsen, if a woman is forced into making sexual contact, then her body will detect this non-consent and prevent the woman from conceiving due to rape. "I'm under the understanding that in many cases of rape, it does not involve any pregnancy because of the trauma of the situation that may be true with incest a little bit. I'm convinced because of the trauma it would not be like it was with consensual sex,” said Nielsen.
Such disturbing comments will most likely further traumatize the rape victims, according to a Planned Parenthood spokesman. The clinic manager for Stanton Healthcare, Angela Dwyer, stated that there were two young females, while the baby was an outcome of rape incident. One female opted to keep the baby, while the other female wanted to put the baby for adoption.
The legislator sticks to his statement, revealing that he read similar information even before he became a lawmaker. However, according to a local OBGYN, none of the comments made by the legislator can be scientifically proven and revealed that certain common misconceptions do exist. The medical director for the OBGYN program at St. Alphonsus, Martha Lund, said that the legislator’s comment might be based on the fact that at times constant brutal stress can impact fertility, but acute stress of rape won’t have a similar impact.
