ICC prosecutors in Kenya to investigate election violence
Top prosecutors of the International Criminal Court are now in Kenya to probe the country’s post election violence. In 2008 around 1200 citizen were killed and more than 100,000 people were displaced in the disputed election.
ICC investigation Chief Luis Moreno Ocampo has also planned to meet victims of this mishap and the senior government officials during his five-day tour to the country.
This is Mr. Ocampo’s first visit to Kenya. ICC has given him the authority to investigate the issues related to the elections. He has also decided to meet the business communities of the country and the civil society groups to ensure that there will be no repetition of 2008 mishap in this time. The general election is going to be held in the year 2012.
As per sources the 2008 violence was created by the powerful politician and business leaders of the country. Common people have accused this elite group of fueling violence in the country. But now the politician of both sides has agreed to support the ICC prosecutors in investigation and help them to organize a peaceful election this time.
