Hyundai Motor plug-in car sales jump 80% to over 30,000 units in June 2023

South Korea-headquartered Hyundai Motor Company, which includes the world-famous Hyundai and Genesis brands, enjoyed a significant rise in the sales of its plug-in electric vehicles in June 2023. Releasing stats for last month, the South Korean manufacturer announced that its combined wholesale shipments of plug-in cars (Hyundai and Genesis brands) amounted to 31,731 units, up 80 per cent year-over-year. The figure accounts roughly 8.5 per cent of the company’s total sales volume, which is also significantly up from 5.2 per cent a year ago.

The data indicates that sales of all-electric cars (BEVs) grew 95 per cent year-over-year to settle at 25,960 units. The company noted that BEV deliveries to customers amounted to slightly more than 20,000 units. These figures show the difference between the wholesale shipments and deliveries to customers. The brand’s dedicated battery electric IONIQ models, such as the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, accounted for majority of the total EV sales in the month under review.

Commenting on the monthly results, the company said, “Hyundai Motor is solidifying its electric vehicle (EV) sales momentum by selling more than 20,000 units around the globe in June. Hyundai’s dedicated battery electric IONIQ models, including IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, accounted for over 60 per cent of its total EV sales.”

By powertrain type, wholesale shipments include 25,960 BEVs (up 95 per cent year-over-year at 6.9 per cent share) and 5,771 PHEVs (up 32 per cent at 1.5 per cent share). Total plug-in car sales, thus, settled at 31,731 units, representing an increase of 80 per cent.

The company also sold 308 units of FCVs last month. In this sub-segment declined 67 per cent year-over-year. In terms of market share, FCVs accounted for just 0.1 per cent.

Year to date (YTD), the brand’s plug-in electric car wholesale shipments grew 8.4 per cent year-over-year to settle at 173,000 units. By powertrain type, YTD plug-in car wholesale shipments includes 145,059 BEVs (up 76 per cent at 7 per cent share) and 28,456 PHEVs (up 17 per cent at 1.4 per cent share). Total YTD plug-ins settled at 173,515 units (up 62 per cent at 8.4 per cent share). YTD shipments of FCVs slipped 44 per cent to 3,138 units.

For reference, the Seoul-based South Korean manufacturer sold more than 240,000 plug-in electric cars, including approx. 195,000 BEVs (up 56 per cent year-over-year).
