Hyundai Motor America enjoys jump in Ioniq 5/6 sales in May 2023

Hyundai Motor America, a wholly-owned subsidiary of South Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai Motor Co., enjoyed a jump in sales of its E-GMP platform-based all-electric cars in May 2023.

Sales of Hyundai’s BEVs (apart from the Kona Electric for which information remains unavailable), increased to a record high of 3,417 units in May this year, up 78 per cent from the corresponding month of 2022. The total number of BEVs sold last month set a new monthly sales record, while accounting for roughly 5 per cent of the brand's total sales volume in the month under review.

Overall, the company sold 70,001 vehicles last month in the U.S. market, up nearly 18 per cent year-over-year. The year-to-date (YTD) result is also encouraging, as it settled down at a positive number of 325,262 units, up 16 per cent from the corresponding month of last year.

The brand’s results received a big boost from robust sales of the E-GMP platform-based all-new Hyundai Ioniq 6 SUV, which set a new record of 971 units. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 also performed well, as its sales increased 28 per cent year-over-year to settle at 2,446 units. These figures become more impressive when we consider the fact these EVs aren’t eligible for the U.S. federal government’s federal tax credit of $7,500.

Total Ioniq family accounted for sales of 3,417 units, up 78 pe cent year-over-year and 4.9 per cent share of the market. When it comes to YTD sales, more than 12,000 units of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 SUVs were sold in the U.S. market, up to 16 per cent year-over-year.

More precisely, Hyundai sold 10,505 units and 2,083 units of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 SUVs in the first five month of this year, respectively. The sales of the Ioniq 5 slipped 3 per cent year-over-year, while no such comparison could be made for the Ioniq 6 as it is a new model.

For reference, the total sales of the Ioniq 5 SUV amounted to 22,982 units during the twelve months of last year, which represented around 3.2 per cent of the brand’s total sales volume. Unfortunately, the sales data shared by the American arm of the South Korean automaker don’t include the sales results of other electric or plug-in hybrid electric models, as these models are counted together with conventional or non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles.
