Hundreds of people sue Johns Hopkins University over STD Study
Hundreds of people, who were part of a sexually transmitted diseases (STD) study, sued Johns Hopkins University. According to reports, about 800 former research subjects infected with STD in Guatemala are looking for justice, while the private research university in Baltimore stated that people should not blame the university.
As per the reports, the experiment happened over 65 years ago. Attorneys of the victim said that it is the time to right a terrible wrong, while according to Johns Hopkins, it should be blamed for the experiment. The Guatemalan research was conducted in 1940s and '50s. Subjects in the experiment were found infected with syphilis and other STDs.
The lawsuit filed by hundreds of people claimed that Johns Hopkins was responsible for designing and creating the Guatemala experiments. After that, the experiments were approved. Paul Bekman, one of the attorneys who have been representing the victims and their families in Guatemala, said that the creators of the experiment kept a lid on it to ensure that nobody knew about it. They have actively deceived those people in the study, Bekman added.
According to the lawsuit, several tests were carried out on women, orphans and soldiers. Johns Hopkins has expressed sympathy for people who were part of the study conducted by the United States Government in Guatemala. It also said that the study was not a Johns Hopkins study. Johns Hopkins did not initiate, pay for, direct or conduct the study in Guatemala, as per the university.
As per the university, the research was funded and conducted by the United States Government. The United States President, United States Secretary of State and Secretary of Health and Human Services have apologized to the Guatemalan government and to the people who have been affected.
