HMSI expects its bikes to overtake its scooters in unit sales
There is no denying that Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India, the 100% subsidiary of the Japanese automaker Honda Motor Corporation brought the trend of scooters back in the Indian market with the launch of the much-popular Activa and Eterno but the company expects its unit sales to tilt more towards the Motorcycles segment rather then the scooters in the coming times.
Out of the total 12 lakh sales that the company filed in the last fiscal, the scooters sold 7.4 lakh units in 2009-10, which accounted for nearly 60% of the total sales.
It may be noted here that with over a 50% market share, HMSI is a market leader in the scooters segment in the Indian market.
Shinji Aoyama, President and CEO, HMSI said the company will keep on expanding in the scooters segment but believes that by the year 2011-12, the motorcycles unit sales will surpass that of the scooters as until the new plant coming at Rajasthan starts, the company will be facing limitations as far as the production of scooters in concerned.
While the best selling Activa sells about 50,000 units a month, the Dio sells around 5,000 units and the Aviator stands at 10,000 units on an average.
