High Coffee Intake Can Increase Risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment

So far, studies that have been conducted to check positive and negative effects of coffee has shown that coffee intake is bad for health as the stimulant found in coffee can temporarily increase heart rate and blood pressure. Now, a new study has shown that increasing coffee consumption over time may increase the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

The study published in the journal of Alzheimer's disease aimed to estimate the association between change or constant habits in coffee consumption and the incidence of MCI.

As per researchers MCI is basically an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Researchers for the study evaluated 1,445 individuals between 65 and 84 years for over a period of three and a half year.

Researchers stated that changing your habit by increasing coffee consumption over time may increase risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Francesco Panza from the University of Bari Aldo Moro, Bari, Italy, one of the researchers, said, "These findings from the Italian Longitudinal Study on Ageing suggested that cognitively normal older individuals who never or rarely consumed coffee and those who increased their coffee consumption habits had a higher risk of developing MCI".

This is the reason that moderate and regular coffee consumption may have neuroprotective effects also against MCI, he added.

One interest find of this study was that cognitively normal older individuals who modified their habits by increasing with time their amount of coffee consumption had about two times higher rate of MCI compared to those with reduced habits.
