Heptathletes Pramila, Singha Roy qualify for Beijing Olympics

It was a proud moment for the women heptathetes JJ Pramila and Sushmita Singha Roy on Friday when they qualified for Olympic Games by winning ‘A’ standard in the National Jumps and Combined events.

They have now attained the qualifying marks and have secured their berth in Beijing-bound squad. India would now be sending three heptathletes at the quadrennial event, with JJ Shobha already clearing the ‘A’ mark.

Pramila from Jharkhand performed outstandingly to get the aggregate of 6078 points. Sushmita Singha Roy too gave a brilliant performance by securing 6027 points. The second day of the competition saw both the athletes qualifying for ‘A’ with the minimum requirement of 6000 points.

Pramilla after her impressive performance said that is really happy for herself. The 30-year old woman had been unsuccessful in getting a berth in Athens Olympic by just three points. The enthusiast heptathlete said, “Because of the last edition’s experience, I was anxious till the end. After the javelin, I knew the berth was very much in my grasp but the nervousness was still there.”

The 23-year-old Sushmita after winning said that though she was not in her full form, she was happy for she had secured a berth for herself.

On the other hand, Anju Boby George repeated her flawless performance with a jump of 6.55m to win gold in the women’s long jump, which actually didn’t come as surprise to anyone.

The total number of athletes who have qualified for Beijing has come up to 16, with two qualifications on Friday.
