Heart rate formula taking a spin

Heart rate formula taking a spinResearchers claim to have revised the heart rate procedure, benchmarking a lower maximum for women.

This goes against the norms where doctors estimate the women’s peak heart rates were observed during a stress test. This indicates that women should be ready to hear a worsened verdict than she actually had.

It was believed that the heart rate issues seemed to have come up due to peak heart rates that were thought to be based on males only.

Martha Gulati, assistant professor of medicine and preventive medicine and a cardiologist at Northwestern Medicine, stated “Now we know for the first time what is normal for women, and it’s a lower peak heart rate than for men,” as reported by Discovery News.

It is further added that the change comes when the old formula is 220 minus the participant’s age. However in Gulati’s opinion 206 minus 88 percent of age should be the actual calculation for women. This indicates a difference of a heart rate of 165 (old formula) versus about 158 incase of old women.

Gulati said that with the help of this formula one can actually meet their age-defined heart rate.
