Health ministry will soon make proper labeling of food items mandatoryThe Union Health and Family Welfare ministry will soon make labeling of food products mandatory. This step has been taken to make consumers aware of ingredients, calories and saturated fat they intake. Government authorities believe that labeling food items will also make people aware of the harms of consuming junk food.

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Anbumani Ramadoss told media that in a month's time, all food products in India will essentially have ingredients on one side
(of the cover of food packets) and on the other side, nutritional value like calories and saturated fat.

Ramadoss said that the junk food was contributing to juvenile diabetes, childhood obesity and hypertension. He added that more needs to be done to enhance awareness. The ministry has sent advisories to states to ban junk food in educational institutions.

The health ministry is also working upon a national alcoholic policy. This policy would be recommendatory in nature to states and not mandatory. This policy will stress on things like fixed timings for alcohol consumption, quantity limitation, age limit and holidays (alcohol-free days).
