Hating one’s job has same impact on mental health as unemployment, study
According to a new study, hating one's job can be as detrimental to a person's mental health as being unemployed.
Australian researchers have said that the poor working conditions can face similar mental pressure as those who are out of work. The researchers noted that psychological factors like demanding job, cruel boss and poor job security cause mental health problems in persons.
The researchers at the Australian National University compared the mental health of British people who were out of work with those facing difficult working environment. Peter Butterworth, the author of the study said that people unhappy with their jobs are just as likely to have mental health issues as people without any job.
"Our analysis clearly established that there was no difference in the rates of common mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, between those who were unemployed and those who were in the poorest quality jobs. Both of these groups of individuals were more likely to experience a common mental disorder than those who were in high quality work," he said.
Earlier studies have also established the relationship between mental health issues with unfavorable working conditions.
