Guj to have a dept for climate change

CM says in assembly the move is first of its kind in entire Asia

In order to tackle climate change and related issues, chief minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the establishment of a separate department. Modi moved a resolution under section 44 of the assembly. He said that government has, in principle, taken the decision for the establishment of such a department.

"I am pleased to declare that the state has taken this initiative to establish a separate climate and will be first in the country to do so. In fact, such an initiative is the first of its kind in entire Asia," he said.

He said that there are only six countries in the world which have a dedicated department that caters to the problems related to climate change. He said that the move is a path-breaking decision, in the direction of Gujarat's fight against climate change.

Elaborating its role, Modi said that department would formulate multi-dimensional policy, and coordinate with other departments. It will also undertake extensive research on impact of change in climate on coastal areas.

"Revolving fund for R&D in Green Technology and promotion of its usage would also be established. Co-operation with national and international agencies will be undertaken and universities will take up the R&D of the same. The government will take up awareness drive in public private partnership (PPP)," he added.
