Government to ensure security check of telecom equipmentThe Union Government has expressed concern about rising security threats and has now come up with a new proposal. UPA government has decided to conduct a mandatory security check of all imported telecommunication gadgets and related equipments in order to foil any attempt to breach security of the nation.

The center has also proposed a telecom equipment testing centre for carrying out necessary testing for which discussions have been started.

Bharti Vaid, the spokesperson of DoT said, "Discussions have been held with telecom operators on the security aspects."

Ms. Vaid hoped that discussions with telecom operators will soon yield fruitful results and the country would have full fleged legislation for compulsory testing. The government, over cautious over security issues post Mumbai militant attack, has already urged operators such as Bharti Airtel,

Reliance Communications, Vodafone and Idea will have to follow self-regulatory guidelines while purchasing telecommunication equipment abroad.

Government would register the equipment suppliers in order to allow monitoring and checking by security officials. Government is already proposing ban to import Chinese telecom equipment. However, stiff opposition by various operators may delay the decision.
