Government draws plan for setting up new schools

Government draws plan for setting up new schools After successfully passing the Right to Education Bill, the government has announced its decision to put primary education program on a fast track, setting up 6,000 new model schools, including 2500 under PPP mode, by the start of new academic session.

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, after a meeting with HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, said: “There is a program for setting up 6,000 model schools in the country -- 3,500 on a 100 per cent government basis and 2,500 on a PPP mode. Both the Ministry (Human Resource Development) and we have been looking at how this can be done."

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said that the government will finalize a model for setting up schools in the next four weeks. New schools, aimed at providing quality education to 25 lakh underprivileged children, will be better equipped with facilities than the currently running Kendriya Vidyalayas.

Mr Sibal added: "The nitty gritty of this will have to be worked out. We are going to have the private sector coming... we will have FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries) and other people participating in the process."
