Google in public spat with Verizon
Internet giant, Google has exchanged a public spat with its telecom partner, Verizon over the issue of mobile payments as both the firms aim to expand their presence in the emerging segment of the mobile phone market.
The companies have different opinions on weather Google’s new ‘Google Wallet’ e-commerce app should come in on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which is the flagship model for the Android platform. Google claims that Verizon is against offering the app on the smartphone.
A company spokesperson said that the telecom provider as asked Google not to include the app in the smartphone. The handset is expected to be launched on December 9 on Verizon’s 4G LTE network in the US market and thus the two companies have very little time to negotiate with each other.
The smartphone will come with NFC (near-field communication) technology, which allows users to make payments using their phones. The Sprint-carried Nexus S 4G is capable of using the Google Wallet app and Google is aiming to increase uptake of the app to expand its presence in the mobile e-commerce market.
Verizon responded by saying that it does not block any apps and the reports suggesting that the telecom service provider has not allowed the app on the handset are false.
