Going By Scientific Research, Bt. Brinjal Is Safe: Prithviraj Chavan
Days after the environment department put a suspension on the introduction of Bt Brinjal in the Indian market, Science Minister Prithviraj Chavan stated that there is no point "emotionalizing the matter" as scientific research detects the crop harmless for human beings.
Mr. Chavan said, “Let's not emotionalise the issue and discuss it on the basis of science. We are satisfied and if we go by science alone, Bt Brinjal is safe for human consumption.”
He added that researchers working in the field are happy. The whole work out of more than 9 years (of research) says that it is secure.
There are three phases of bio safety checks and all have optimistic outcomes, he also said.
The minister said he will give a statement on the floor of Parliament.
"I am going to set up a bio technology regulatory authority," he said promising to figure out any trouble linked to GM products.
On Feb 9, environment minister Jairam Ramesh put a suspension on Bt Brinjal in quest of more security tests to satisfy those contradicting it. (With Input from Agencies)
