German grant for Sichuan aid relief is "first step"

germany & China FlagBerlin  - The German government announced a grant Tuesday of 500,000 (770,000 dollars) euros for earthquake victims in Sichuan, south-western China, and described the funds, to be sent via the German Red Cross, as a "first step" in its relief aid.

Aides quoted Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier during a visit to Russia expressing condolences to the bereaved and survivors. Germany had offered aid to the stricken province on Monday. This would begin with help for the injured and homeless. (dpa)
