Berlin - Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany sent Australia her condolences Tuesday over the high loss of life in the bush fires.

In a message to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, she said she had heard the news with deep shock and voiced her sympathy to the families of victims and the Australian people. The forest fires may have claimed over 200 lives. (dpa)
