Scrap syringes seized

In their frantic investigations into the hepatitis-B outbreak, Sabarkantha officials have seized a cache of used syringes, needles and IV sets from a Modasa scrap shop that could provide clues about the spread of the virus.

The medical supplies were found, on Wednesday, during a raid on Shabnam Scrap Centre, in Bhangar Gali. “How the items reached a scrap shop is still a mystery. But the culprit will be found and punished,” said the assistant commissioner of food and drug department, KG Nogia. 

No hepatitis-B death was reported in Modasa on Wednesday.

One soldier also was wounded when Sergeant Elias Tial ran amok late Wednesday inside their barracks in Fort Bonifacio in Manila's Taguig City, Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Brawner said.

Brawner identified the fatalities as Captain Benito Ramos, First Lieutenant Gerald Fuentes and Master Sergeant Eliseo de la Cruz.

Two soldiers also were wounded when Sergeant Elias Tial ran amok late Wednesday inside their barracks in Fort Bonifacio in Manila's Taguig City, Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Brawner said.

Brawner said the suspect, whose father died Saturday, escaped after the incident but the M16 rifle used in the shooting was recovered by his superior.

Colombian authorities arrest 38 suspects with Cali cartel ties Bogota  - Colombian authorities on Wednesday arrested 38 people with ties to former drug lords Gilberto and Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela, the brothers who led the Cali cartel and are now imprisoned in the United States.

Colombian Attorney General Mario Iguaran said that their sister, Amparo Rodriguez Orejuela, was among those arrested in raids across Colombia in the so-called Operation Second Generation, as are four children of the two men.

Sumps turn killer swamps

The city and its adjacent areas report at least 1,000 cases of unnatural deaths, including drowning in sumps, in a year, police commissioner Shankar M Bidari said. This figure, on an average, translates to at least 83 such deaths a month.
Bidari said such cases are filed under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Core (CrPC). The case of three children who had drowned in a sump at their house, on Monday, also falls under this section.
Bidari further said that no case will be registered against the parents of the children, who had drowned at their Hosur Bande house near Bagalur on Monday afternoon. A case has been registered under Section 174 of the CrPC, he added.
