General Motors to introduce entry level sports car Camaro in India
General Motors is all set to launch its entry level sports car Camaro in the Indian automobile market. President Tim Lee of GM international operations said that company is planning to introduce a right-hand drive for the two-door car which can be positioned below the Chevrolet Spark, to derive high volumes in the auto market of India.
He believed that in future it will become the second fastest growing auto market in the world.
Last year, GM had displayed Camero at the Auto Expo but the company had not revealed its immediate plans for introducing the car in India. It is expected that car would be priced in the range of Rs 30 lakh plus which would become the most expensive car offered by GM in India, but ranked as the cheapest sports car in the world.
Lee said that GM's association with India is 14 years old and holds a greater proportion of market share with its inconsistent and spotty approach.
Camaro base model is prices at $ 20,000 in US which could go up to $ 40,000, but as the company will import it as completely built unit (CBU), the import duty of 110% will be charged, and hence the price of the car would get doubled. GM considers itself as a brand builder with the introduction of this car.
Lee further said that company's focus is to build best design cars which are sustainable and profitable in the Indian business model. Company is also interested to provide employment to more people in India. Lee added that the company plans to explore all the segments in the country to increase its sales including a car priced below the Spark. The company's president and managing director Karl Slym later told FE that the company is even considering in launching an 800 cc powered Spark which is already ruling Europe market, making it the cheapest car ever launched by GM during their 14 years in India.
General Motors has organized a board meeting last week in India where the officials have discussed their ten-year growth plan. The meeting was headed by Lee, who said that company is taking all possible steps to design vehicles which would be specific to the local conditions and tastes. The company also disclosed its plans for the public offering in the US in November.
